The Story

The Vision Behind This Project

The Challenge

This Alexandria home received a transformative rear addition — an 8-by-22-foot bump-out that expanded both the kitchen and an adjacent bedroom, fundamentally reshaping how the family lives on the main floor. The structural work began with the removal of exterior walls and windows, followed by the installation of three LVL beams and six pier footings to carry the new addition. Exterior walls were clad in vinyl siding with code-compliant insulation, and a new asphalt shingle roof was tied seamlessly into the existing structure.

Materials & Finishes

Kitchen The kitchen strikes a balance between warmth and function, anchored by Hampshire semi-custom wood cabinetry in a soft-close configuration and finished with hardware selected through Moss. Euro Stone Craft supplied the countertops, bringing a refined, durable surface to the expanded workspace. The sink, faucet, and garbage disposal were all sourced through Build.com, keeping the plumbing fixtures cohesive. Appliances include a GE Profile 30-inch Smart Built-In Convection Double Wall Oven with No Preheat Air Fry and Precision Cooking, a Whirlpool refrigerator (model WRS571CIHZ), an over-the-range microwave, and a homeowner-provided cooktop and hood insert — a mix that reflects both performance and personal preference. Pendant lighting from Home Depot completes the space with a warm, layered glow over the new island and counters.

Hall Bathroom Every fixture in the reimagined hall bathroom was selected with everyday livability in mind. The vanity and its faucet, along with the bathtub, tub drain kit, tub and shower trim with valve, and toilet, were all sourced through Ferguson — creating a unified plumbing palette from a single trusted supplier. Accessories follow suit: a towel ring, towel bar, paper holder, and robe hook, all from Ferguson, bring quiet consistency to the walls. A lighted medicine cabinet from Ferguson serves as both storage and a softly illuminated focal point above the vanity. Tile materials were selected through the project's tile allowance to finish the 3-by-5-foot shower and tub surround with its built-in niche, as well as the floor. A Ferguson bath fan, exhausted to the outside, rounds out the space with proper ventilation.

Additional Spaces A barn door was introduced for a son's room, adding a casual, space-conscious touch to what had been a standard interior opening. Hardwood flooring — carried through the new bedroom addition and refinished to match throughout the main floor and stairs — ties the expanded home together underfoot.
