The Story

The Vision Behind This Project

The Challenge

This whole-main-floor transformation in Alexandria, Virginia reimagined the way a classic home lives and flows. The kitchen was stripped to the studs — existing cabinetry, countertops, and a non-load-bearing full-height wall all came down — opening the space and allowing for a thoughtfully redesigned layout. Homeowner-supplied cabinetry was installed alongside a new tile backsplash, custom woodwork radiator cover and bench, and a pot filler at the range. A new Anderson three-panel patio door with wood interior, fiberglass exterior, and grilles on all glass replaced the original sliding glass door, bringing in natural light and a refined architectural presence. Plumbing was fully updated to serve the sink, dishwasher, pot filler, and refrigerator, and new GFCI outlets and switches were added throughout.

Materials & Finishes

Kitchen The kitchen centers on a suite of homeowner-curated appliances — including a range, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, hood vent insert, and a beverage center (PRB24C01CG) — all integrated into a layout designed around custom woodwork and thoughtful craftsmanship. The sink wall anchors the space with an apron sink, a coordinating sink faucet, and a sink strainer and drain, all selected by the homeowner and installed as part of the plumbing scope. A pot filler at the range adds both function and a considered culinary detail. Custom millwork includes a radiator cover and bench with perforated sheet metal panels and piano-hinged bench tops — a design-forward solution that turns a utilitarian element into a built-in feature. Maple butcher block and three maple shelves bring warmth and material contrast to the cabinetry composition.

Dining Room Centered on a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, the dining room's wainscoting paneling establishes the room's architectural character — a tailored backdrop for the homeowner-supplied wallpaper installed above. The millwork package, including crown molding and coordinating baseboard, ties the dining room seamlessly to the adjoining kitchen and living spaces.

Living Room The living room's standout finish element is the custom fireplace millwork — a bespoke carpentry composition designed to give the hearth the presence it deserves. Paired with a new fireplace hearth and a custom wood radiator cover at the window, the room's built-in details read as intentional and cohesive rather than assembled over time.
