The Story
The Vision Behind This Project
The Challenge
MOSS transformed the lower level of this Fairfax Station home into a fully finished, thoughtfully designed living space — taking the basement from dated and carpeted to a cohesive, move-in-ready retreat. The scope began with a full demolition: existing carpet (including the staircase), the original railing, all basement interior doors, and the entire existing bathroom were removed and cleared. In their place, MOSS built out a complete new full bathroom, installed new luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the basement and up the staircase to the main level, and introduced a fresh railing system connecting the two floors. Every surface — walls, trim, ceilings, and the staircase — was prepped, primed, and painted for a unified finish.

Basement Bathroom Crafted to feel like a proper full bath rather than a utilitarian afterthought, the basement bathroom draws its character from a curated mix of fixtures and finishes sourced from trusted trade partners. The vanity and vanity faucet with drain assembly were selected through Build.com, paired with a mirror that keeps the space feeling open and well-proportioned. Shower trim was also sourced through Build.com, with the shower valve supplied by Ferguson — a combination that ensures lasting performance behind the wall and clean, consistent detailing at the surface. Accessories include a towel ring, paper holder, and two towel hooks from Ferguson, all chosen to complement the vanity hardware. The toilet completes the fixture package with understated practicality. Wall and floor tile throughout the bathroom was sourced from Tilebar, bringing texture and visual cohesion to the space, with a tiled shower niche adding a built-in detail that elevates the overall design. The shower is enclosed with a glass door from Dulles Glass and Mirror, keeping the footprint feeling airy. Vanity lighting from Build.com and a bath fan round out the space, with the fan vented to the exterior for proper air quality.
Living Room / Entertainment Area The entertainment wall is where the basement announces itself as a finished, designed space. Hampshire semi-custom cabinetry — upper and base units built around the TV — provides both storage and architectural presence, with quartz countertops lending a refined, durable work surface. Cabinet hardware from Top Knobs ties the built-ins together with a cohesive, considered touch, and the wall area behind the TV was painted to integrate seamlessly with the cabinetry color for a custom, built-in effect.
