The Story
The Vision Behind This Project
The Challenge
This comprehensive main-level renovation in Oak Hill, VA transformed the kitchen, family room, dining room, and laundry room while adding a stunning covered porch and deck to expand the outdoor living space. The project involved removing interior walls between the kitchen, dining room, and breakfast nook to create an open-concept floor plan, raising the sunken family room floor to match the main level, and reconfiguring the laundry room and coat closet. The kitchen was completely gutted and rebuilt with new cabinetry, countertops, a farmhouse sink, custom wood hood detail, under-cabinet lighting, and all new appliances. The family room fireplace received a new mantle and surround, while the laundry room was enhanced with custom built-ins and wood countertops.

Overview
Materials & Finishes
Kitchen
Designed around the warmth of natural wood and the clean lines of custom craftsmanship, the kitchen anchors the home with both character and function. Custom cabinetry with selected hardware sets the tone, while a Ruvati RC3618WH farmhouse sink — paired with its coordinating RC3618WH strainer — brings an apron-front elegance to the workspace. An Essential XTR garbage disposal with button switch keeps the design clean and uncluttered beneath the surface. A custom wood hood detail draws the eye upward and reinforces the kitchen's commitment to natural material, echoed again in the wood countertop accents that soften the space. A custom faucet completes the sink wall with a considered, cohesive finish.
Laundry Room
Practical by design but refined in execution, the laundry room features custom built-in cabinetry with selected hardware and wood countertops — a continuation of the home's natural material palette that makes even the most utilitarian space feel intentional. The floor is finished in custom porcelain and ceramic tile installed over a Durock substrate, ensuring durability underfoot for years to come.
Flooring & Staircase
Hartco Hickory American Scrap Monument Valley prefinished hardwood flows throughout the main level, second-level hallway, and stairs, lending the home a cohesive, grounded warmth from room to room. The staircase itself becomes a quiet focal point, finished with a hickory railing, iron balusters, box-style newel posts, and a hickory bottom plate — all brought together with a professional stain finish that honors the wood's natural grain and character.
Fireplace
A new mantle and surround with selected materials reframes the fireplace as a true centerpiece, giving the living space a fresh sense of definition and presence.
Exterior
The outdoor living area is finished with a Trex Enhance composite decking and railing system in a selected color — a low-maintenance, enduring choice that extends the home's design sensibility beyond its walls.
Interior Finishes
Throughout every renovated space, Sherwin-Williams Duration paint provides a lasting, beautifully consistent finish — the quiet backdrop that allows every material and detail to speak for itself.
